Betsy Nabarro, 69, of Hilo, died Dec. 18, 2018, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born Dec. 1, 1949, in Hilo.

She is survived by life partner, Myron Subica; sister, Brenda (Joseph FH Masuno, Sr.) Nabarro; brother in-law, Nathan Wilson, Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kevin Callahan
Kevin Austin Callahan, 58, of Ocean View died Nov. 26, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices in Hilo. Born in San Diego, he was a food server for various restaurants.
A celebration of his life will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Keauhou Beach Park in Kailua-Kona. Casual attire.
He is survived by brothers, Paul (Cathy) John Callahan, Jr. of Idaho, Sean Callahan of Ka’u, Brian Callahan of California; sisters, Mary Callahan of Wisconsin, Meegan Callahan-McDonald of Wisconsin; numerous nieces and nephews.

Karie Wakida
Karie S. Wakida, 84, of Hilo, died Dec. 28, 2018, at the Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. She was born in Hilo and was a retired bookkeeper with the former DIVACO Cooperative, a retired Waiakea Elementary School adult supervisor and crossing guard and also a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.
Visitation 10-11 a.m. Jan. 12, at the Dodo Mortuary chapel. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire, no flowers.
She is survived by her son, Van (Rancha) Wakida of Hilo; daughter, Helene Meguro of Hilo; sisters, Kazue Unebasami, Michiko Okahara, and Ruth (Walter) Tanaka, all of Honolulu; seven sisters-in-law; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

John Kaupu
John Keoni Kaupu, 64, of Hilo, died Dec. 23, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Hilo and was a former general foreman for Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Shop 51 for 37-1/2 years. He retired in 2010.
Visitation 5-6 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel. Wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation also 9-11 a.m. Jan. 14 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel. Funeral service at 11 a.m., followed by cremation. Aloha attire.

Sanae Matsumura
Sanae Matsumura, 77, of Kealakekua, died Nov. 7, 2018, at her residence. Born in Honaunau on May 18, 1941, she was a former cashier at KTA and Sure Save supermarkets. She was a secretary at Kona Rancho Produce, a member of the Kona Senior Karaoke Club, Konawaena High School Class of 1959 alumni and a member of the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.
Private services will be held for immediate family. A celebration of life will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 12 at Yano Hall in Captain Cook. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers and monetary gifts, donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Kona at P.O. Box 4130, Kailua-Kona, HI 96745.
She is survived by her husband, Sueto Matsumura of Kealakekua; sons, Jason (Dayna) Matsumura of Aiea, Oahu and Tyson (Rachelle) Matsumura of Honokaa; daughter, LeAnn Matsumura of Kealakekua; brothers, Koichi (Joan) Fukushima of Captain Cook and John (Betty) Fukushima of Brevard, N.C.; sister, Matsuno Katz of North Las Vegas; one granddaughter; one step granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Maralyn Herkes
Maralyn “Marni” Dyer Herkes, 85, of Waikoloa, died Nov. 21, 2018, at a private care home. Born in Spokane, Wash. on July 7, 1933, she was the executive director of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. She was the president of the Kona Outdoor Circle, statewide director of the Main Street Program, was an active participant of the Kona Community Development Plan and was a v volunteer member of numberous committees and organizations. She also worked at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and Hilo’s Lyman House Museum.
A celebration of life will be held from 3-6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Big Game Fishing Clubhouse at Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona. The family requests casual attire.
She is survived by her sons, Robert (Lynn) Herkes of Ecuador, Ken Herkes of Florida and Doug (Ann Cobb) Herkes of Waikoloa; granddaughter, Sara (Travis Rupp) Herkes of Colorado; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
