Volunteers needed at Waimea Outdoor Circle

From 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 26, residents and visitors can pitch in to help with regular maintenance duties at Waimea Ulu La’Au, the Waimea Outdoor Circle nature park project run by 100 percent volunteer work.

Duties include mowing, hand weeding and weed whacking. A tour of the park is offered for first timers. There are jobs for all ages and abilities, and no knowledge of Hawaiian plants is necessary.

Free vendor event offers all things dog

Get your pup’s Valentine’s theme costume together and join Lava Dogs Hawaii 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at The Shops at Mauna Lani for a fun afternoon of shopping for handmade dog treats, Hawaiian print dog merchandise, and dog lover clothes and home goods.

The free vendor event will also feature sweetheart photos with your pup, services by professional dog groomers, and live demonstrations with professional dog trainers.

Bring your dog into the dog-friendly beer garden, proceeds of which will support Hawaii Island Humane Society and Aloha Ilio Rescue, and get some ono grinds from Any Kine Wonton food truck or one of the Shops’ restaurants.

Cal Berkeley professor to speak

Guest speaker Alex Filippenko, professor of astronomy at University of California at Berkeley, will present at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at Kahilu Theatre for Astronomy Talk. The talk is sponsored by the Rob and Terry Ryan Foundation. It is free and open to the public.
