Waimea Park Bandstand to reopen Friday

KAILUA-KONA — The Waimea Park Bandstand will reopen Friday after vandalism to its bathroom forced its closure a few months ago.

The facility will be open 7 a.m.- 2 p.m. daily and closed on holidays. On holidays, park users are asked to use the Waimea Tennis Court restrooms.

The bandstand bathroom was found vandalized in the early morning hours of Nov. 8, 2018. Roxcie Waltjen, director of Parks and Recreation, said the vandal or vandals broke newly replaced toilet and sink fixtures as well as damaged the outside water fountain and maintenance storage lockers. The cost to taxpayers amounted to over $14,000.

Maintenance staff completed the repairs to the damaged structures and plumbers replaced all of the toilets and sinks that were damaged. Waltjen said she appreciates the public’s patience during this closure and thanked the employees for the hard work that went in to quickly repair the facility.

Anyone who sees someone defacing or damaging park property, should notify authorities by calling the Hawaii Police Department’s nonemergency number at 935-3311.
