John Karratti

John Kapalenaokalani Karratti, 80, of Hilo, died Dec. 18, 2018, at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a construction foreman and contractor, and was a member of Halepule Ke Ola Hou and New Hope Christian Fellowship, and Waiakea Seniors Kupuna Softball.

He is survived by wife, Annette Karratti of Hilo; sons, Shannon John Karratti of Puna, Daniel Charles (Jezelle) Karratti of Hilo, and Sheldon Brede (Faylynn) Karratti of Hilo; daughter, Shelly-Ann Kau’ilani (Halton) Chartrand of Hilo; hanai children, Kaimana (Shana) Ka’apana of Oahu, Namanu (Jarred) Ka’apana-Suzui of Hilo, Kemomi (Stanson) Ka’apana of Hilo, Ku’i (Kalawai’a) Ka’apana of Waimea, Kaluhi (Kalani) Ka’apana of O’ahu, and Kahuwaiali’i Ka’apana of Hilo; 24 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald Cannon

Donald Lawrence Cannon, 58, of Keaau, died Dec. 27, 2018. He was born in Idaho in 1960.

He is survived by daughters, Nicole Ann Cannon of Washington, Cassy Jo Ellis of Washington, and Dakotah Marie Lee Cannon of Idaho.

Harry Fernald

Harry Curtis Fernald, 82, of Pahoa, died Jan. 1, 2019. He was born in Florida in 1936 and was a local artist and art teacher.

He is survived by sons, Sean (Silke) Fernald and Mike Fernald; a brother, Ed Fernald; ex-wife and lifelong friend, Trish Brooks; and five grandchildren.

Leatrice Miyahira

Leatrice E. Miyahira, 77, of Kealakekua-Kona, died Jan. 16, 2019. Born in 1941, she was a 1959 graduate of Konawaena High School and a member of Kanaueue Kumiai and Gaza Yonagusuku Doshi Kai.

She is survived by husband, Richard Miyahira; daughters, Lee-Anne (Darcy) Miyahira-Young and Whitney (Scott) Grohowski; sister, Patsy Jagbandhansingh; brother, Stanley (Mary) Shimizu; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and eldest brother, George Shimizu.

Chrystine Siu

Chrystine Lewis Siu, 63, of Mountain View, died Dec. 30, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, she was an ESL instructor at the University of Hawaii-Hilo, member of The Pilgrim John Howland Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by husband, James Siu, Jr. of Mountain View; daughters, Michelle Stoval of Alabama, Maria Hey of Texas, Pua Siu of Mountain View; one son, sisters, Barbara Angell Vogls of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cindy Keeling of Chicago, Cathy Angell of Seattle; 13 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephws.

Dorothy Carreira

Dorothy Peggy Carreira, 96, of Hilo, died Jan. 12, 2019, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Nov. 7, 1922, in Hilo, she was a retired baker/cook for K’s Drive In and member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and Aunty Sally’s Senior Citizens.

Private services were held.

She is survived by son, Dennis (Ut Vo) Carreira of Hilo; daughters, Sharon Luiz of Florida, Kathleen (Paul Tokuda) Goo of Honolulu; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara Mathews

Barbara “B’Gay” Gay Mathews, 89, of Honokaa, died Jan. 8, 2019, at Hale Ho’ola Hamakua. Born Oct. 22, 1929 in Honolulu, and raised in Waimea, Kauai, she was a retired occupational therapist for Honokaa Sugar Company.

A celebration of life will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers or koden, donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (https://www.cff.org) would be welcomed.

She is survived by husband, Mo Mathews of Honokaa; daughters, Gay (Lucky) Mathews of Honokaa, Sally (Durwood) Ranton of Albany, Oregon; granddaughters, Kristyl (Keith) Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Kerianne (Jeremiah) Ford of Dupont, Washington, Kat (Will) Peterson of Albany, Oregon; seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
