“Sex-Ed Battle Still Raging”

Sex education programs are now in effect at Kona schools, but opponents of the film series are still fighting to bring the programs to a halt.
The latest attempted road block came Friday night when some 15 members of the Big Island’s District II P-TA passed a resolution asking the Department of Education to stop the ETV sex education program in public schools until parents had the opportunity to “review the whole series,” and until teachers have been provided with “adequate instruction.”
District II President Mrs. Jeanna McNicholl of Kailua has attacked the program as “group guidance” and not sex education as such. This week, however, Kona elementary school principals report that the overwhelming majority — 75 to 85 percent — of the parents of the students affected by the program have given their approval.

The first anniversary of the Kona Hilton and the opening of its new 128-room addition were marked Monday when more than 150 people, including Honolulu travel industry executives, press representatives and VIPs, were hosted to a luncheon and tour of the new addition. The new $2.5 million addition features eight shops surrounded by a landscaped, carp pond-centered inner courtyard. Each of the 128 guest rooms features a private lanai, dressing room and under-counter refrigerator.
“Holualoa Man Becomes Third Big Isle Fatality”

Twenty-year Samuel Glenwood Kunewa, of Holualoa, became the island’s third fatality in 1969. Two have occurred in Kona.
Kunewa, an employee at Hotel King Kamehameha, was driving a car down Palani Road when he lost control of the vehicle near Honokohau Road and side-swiped a stonewall before turning over twice. Kunewa, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his car.
