Join SOKO for annual Studio Tour

South Kona Artists Collective – SOKO will be hosting its fifth annual Artists Studio Tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23-24.

The public is invited to join the South Kona artists as they open their studios to show their many talents exhibiting a wide range of professional art including watercolors, oil and acrylic paintings, sumi-e, photography, henna tattoos, woven and natural fiber art, woodcut prints, ceramics, jewelry, assemblage, woodworking, mosaics, pewter castings and sculpture.

SOKO is a group of professional artists who came together to expand their creative vision and generate events that support artists and delight art lovers. The Studio Tour runs from Keauhou to Honaunau, including 20 artists showing in 10 open studios. Follow the yellow signs and flags down Highway 20 to show the way.

Waimea Ballroom Dance Club announces foxtrot lessons

Waimea Ballroom Dance Club is offering six weeks of foxtrot dance lessons at the Kahilu Town Hall on Mondays, Feb. 18 through March 25.

Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. for the first two weeks, dancing begins at 7 p.m. Cost is $40. One time drop in is $10.

Traveling Jewish Wedding Band returns to Gertrude’s

Kona’s Traveling Jewish Wedding Band returns to Gertrude’s Jazz Bar on Alii Drive in downtown Kailua-Kona from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, to present “Jewish Jazz at Gertrude’s.”

This concert of music from around the world will be marked by many special performers. The band features Bill Noble (2018 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner) on clarinet, Sue Garrod (musical director of Casablanca) on trombone, Joel Gimpel (Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra) on violin, Judy Olson on keyboard, Auntie Lani Lee (Na Kupuna O Kona Alii Kumu Hula) on ukulele, Gloria Blum as vocalist and Barry Blum on contra-bass balalaika.

Roz Cohen returns to Kona from Italy as vocalist, Dick Studer, popular Minneapolis jazz musician, will be on guitar, and Clark Welsh is on the island from San Francisco where he plays with several Russian balalaika and klezmer ensembles.

There will be a number of new tunes presented at this show, and all are lively, toe-tapping, heart-thumping songs. Advance seat reservations are highly recommended. The band’s prior appearances at Gertrude’s were sold out.

Eric Sardinas to perform on the Big Island

Slide blues rock guitar wiz Eric Sardinas will be touring Hawaii next week as the Eric Sardinas Band with bandmates Chris Smith on bass and Demie Solaria on drums.

The band will be on the Big Island at Honokaa People’s Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 23 and will wrap up the tour at the Hilo Town Tavern on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Tickets to the show at the Honokaa People’s Theatre are $55/$35. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.

The concert at Hilo Town Tavern begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $55/$30.
