KAILUA-KONA — More snowfall is expected over Big Island summits today as a cold upper low continues to fuel wintry weather conditions.
A cold upper low over the eastern half of the state will continue to bring wintry weather conditions over Haleakala on Maui, and the Big Island summits through this afternoon, National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu said Friday morning. A winter weather advisory remains posted through 10 a.m. Saturday for the summits of the Big Island and Maui.
Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected over Maunakea and Mauna Loa. Additional snow accumulations up to 1 inch forecast over Haleakala.
“Be prepared for near zero visibilities at times on slick icy roads,” forecasters said.
As of 4 p.m. Friday, the Mauna Kea Access Road was closed at the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet “due to below freezing temperatures, high humidity, snow and icy road conditions, fog and chance for more of the same, along with the latest forecast of possible heavy snowfall,” the Maunakea Rangers said.
The road closure will remain in effect until at least Monday evening.
“Should matters change and the roads are cleared and found safe, then they will be reopened at that time,” the rangers said.
