KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island is under a flash flood watch through this afternoon.

A band of moisture is expected to move over the eastern half of the state and stall today, leading to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over Hawaii and Maui Counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Those in the area are advised to avoid crossing fast-flowing water and monitor later forecasts to prepare for a flash flood warning if one is issued.

Get to higher ground immediately in the event of heavy rain or rising water.

The flash flood watch is also in effect for Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui and Molokai.
