“$10.2 Million Aimed At Kealakekua; State Board Studies Plan”

The state Board of Land and Natural Resources this week is studying a $10.2 million development proposal that would ensure preservation of historic Kealakekua Bay, while at the same time converting the bay area into a virtual outdoor museum.
The project, presented to the board last week by architects Thomas H. Creighton and George S. Walters, would include a $2.8 million scenic drive from atop the Kealakekua cliffs, down to Palemano Point, around Honaunau Bay and toward the City of Refuge; an overlook station with terrace; galleries; outdoor theaters; pavilion; and restoration of archaeological sites at Napoopoo. The Pali, Napoopoo, Manini Point and Kaawaloa would house the various facilities.
In addition, the plans call for the creation of a county golf course at Palemano-Mokuohai, and state acquisition of the Mokuohai Battlefield.
The plan, if approved by the state board then the Legislature, would blend together residential, historical, resort and recreational facilities, all within a rigid framework of conservation measures.
The first phase of the program would implement $4 million for construction of the scenic drive and other facilities, including the lookout station.
While the state already owns much of the 7,500 acres of undeveloped property in the Kealakekua area, consultants have urged the additional purchase of some 500 acres of privately owned land. It has also been suggested by planners that the county purchase an additional 337 acres.
Total cost of the land acquisitions is estimated to cost $278,000.
Advisers have also suggested that the entire Kealakekua coastal area be designated as scenic historical district. The intent of the proposal is to assure conservationist and historians that these areas will remain safe from non-conservation orientated development.
“Kona Eyes Stewardess College”

Five organization of Kona have joined the campaign in support of the Big Island as the site for the proposed Western Air Lines stewardess college. The organizations, which includes the Kona Lions, Rotary Club of Kona, Captain Cook Community Association, Kona Chamber of Commerce and the Kona Jaycees, sent letters all recommending the Koan Coast as the site for the college because of its perfect weather, beauty and hospitality.
“Rotary Club To Celebrate Anniversary”

The Rotary Club of Kona celebrates its 21st anniversary tomorrow night. The club received its charter in 1948. Honored Rotarians included Lin Child, Minoru Tanouye, Robert Greenwell, George Cherry and Sam Liau.

“Sakais Receive Citation”

Mr. and Mrs. Kakauchi Sakai of Hawi were presented the posthumous award for their son, Sgt. 1st Class Ernest S. Sakai. Sgt. Sakai received the Silver Star for throwing his body on a Viet Cong booby trap in order to save the lives of two of his comrades. They were also awarded a Bronze Star for their son’s heroism in connection with a combat incident that occurred a month before Sakai’s death in June 1968.

Reigning over the 1969 Konawaena School Homecoming was Carolyn Machado with her court made up of Jenny Iguchi, freshman; Maelene Mederios, sophomore; Sharon Abay-Abay, junior; and Marsha Casil, senior.
