KAILUA-KONA — More than half of the motorists arrested for suspected driving on the Big Island between Feb. 11 and Sunday were arrested in the Kona District.
Of the 32 people arrested, 18 were in the Hawaii Police Department’s Kona District, which comprises the physical areas of North and South Kona. Seven of the 32 drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.
Outside Kona, officers in South Hilo arrested seven motorists while officers in Puna arrested four, according to police. Officers in North Hilo, Ka’u and South Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 151 DUI arrests compared with 139 during the same period last year. Major crashes are down 24.5 percent from 155 at this time in 2018 to 117 so far this year.
Two people have died on Big Island public roads this year, the same number of people killed at this time in 2018.
