Torch run for Special Olympics April 20

First Hawaiian Bank and Hawaii Police Department are partnering to sponsor the 34th annual Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run/Walk, 8:45 a.m. April 20 at First Hawaiian Bank in Kailua-Kona as a benefit for Special Olympics West Hawaii.

The purpose of the non-competitive run/walk is to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics Hawaii. In Hawaii, the Torch Run is named after fallen Honolulu Police Officer Troy Barboza, who volunteered as a Special Olympics coach and participated in the first Torch Run in Hawaii held in 1985.

Participants will proceed from the bank down Palani Road to Alii Drive and turn around at Hale Halewai, back track to Palani and left at Kuakini Highway, to the Old Airport behind the Kona Aquatic Center. A Special Olympics athlete will then light the cauldron to begin the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics Regional Softball Area Games.

Donations of $30 are requested and donors will receive a 2019 commemorative Torch Run dri fit shirt. Sizes and styles are limited.
