Benefit concert, magic show for Kim Sweeney at Kohala Village Hub
A benefit concert and magic show for Kim Sweeney will be held 7-10 p.m. Saturday at the Kohala Village Hub.
Solar Wind, Lako Street Band, Union Mill Band and Live and Large Jam Band will all perform. Magicians the Great Barusky, Bruce and Jennifer Meyers, and Arneleo the Great will all showcase their magic talents.
There is a suggested donation of $20 at the door.
World-class singer Lee to perform in Kailua-Kona
Singer Seiko Lee will perform with A Ala Mau Hula ballet at 7 p.m. Friday for a benefit concert for Fukushima Kids Hawaii.
The performance will take place at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden in Kailua-Kona. Admission is $15 and refreshments will be provided after the concert.
Lee is a Japanese soprano living in New York. She has been a frequent soloist with the New York City Symphony and her concert tours have taken her to 27 countries where she has sung in 25 languages.

Kahilu Theatre presents a legendary evening with Hawaiian music icons
Kahilu Theatre welcomes Brother Noland and special guests Tony Conjugacion, Robi Kahakalau, Dwight Kanae and Kata Maduli at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
Brother Noland Conjugacion is a legacy Hawaiian artist. He is a composer, innovator, and a storyteller. Music is his way of sharing these stories. Born and raised in the Hawaiian Islands, Brother Noland has deeply influenced contemporary Hawaiian music with timeless hits such as “Coconut Girl” and “Big Ship.”
Joining Brother Noland on stage after a hiatus of several years will be the amazing talents of Tony Conjugacion. Tony is an award-winning composer, entertainer, recording artist, kumu hula and former original cast member of Broadway’s hit “Miss Saigon.” Also joining the Conjugacion brothers for this performance is one of Hawaii’s most gifted and unique vocalists ever to grace the stage — Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning musical artist, Robi Kahakalau, as well as the guitar styling’s of Hawaiian slack key master Dwight Kanae and bass player Kata Maduli. Together, these legends of Hawaiian music have woven a tale of Hawaiian music history through an evening of traditional and contemporary song and dance.

See the lineup for First Friday Art-After-Dark
This Friday, Holualoa Village again welcomes friends and visitors to its monthly celebration of art, music and food: First Friday Art-After-Dark.
March’s event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday. The village block party features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as free live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is for all ages.
MField Gallery will be presenting new photography by Katie Winkenhower, new paintings by Mike Field and Terry Field, as well as fresh jewelry designs by MiNei Designs Hawaii and Jana Luxe.
Glyph Art Gallery welcomes a new artist to the gallery, Ilze Sims. She offers stylized original paintings inspired by lava and waves in a distinctive graphic, flowing style, as well as metal prints of her originals, and hand painted ceramic tiles. Also look for Don Slocum’s beautiful photos of sea, sky and earth in front of the gallery, along with bread and pastries by Sundog Bread.
Holualoa Gallery will be featuring two newly acquired paintings by the late master Darrell Hill. Musician John-E Collins will be performing rock and roll to sing along and enjoy out front.
Dave Lawrence will be rocking the north end of the village, playing classic rock ‘n’ roll at Koa Realty along with numerous food vendors, and the Mauna High Notes will be providing Hawaiian tunes for the south end of the village. Dr. Tim and Friends are playing in front of Ipu Arts Plus Gallery, at the north end of Holualoa.
Paint your own silk scarf
Join Big Island artist Patti Pease Johnson, for the Paint Your Own Silk Scarf workshop from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center. Cost for the workshop is $50 and $45 for VAC Members plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome. In this workshop, you’ll paint your own 8×53 scarf using three colors of your choice, which will create many more colors on the silk. Pick a main color, then choose the other two after learning about color theory. You’ll then be ready to mix your desired colors, achieved by pre-mixing the four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black).

Hula Voices at Volcano Art Center
The Volcano Art Center’s 2019 Hula Voices series continues at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The program features na kumu hula Ka’ea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons of Halau Kaeaikahelelani, with moderator Desiree Moana Cruz.
Hula Voices is an oral history project, presenting an engaging, intimate talk story session with Hawaii Island’s hula practitioners, as they share their hula genealogy, traditions, protocols and experiences. These free, educational offerings occur regularly on the first Wednesday of each month, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Park entrance fees may apply.
Both Ka’ea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons are native residents of Kalaoa. Ka’ea and Lily come from a family of hula dancers and musicians and are proud to have the opportunity to carry on this legacy that was gifted to them by their mother Sally Alohikea-Toko. As students of Halau Na Lei O Kaholoku, under the direction of kumu hula Nani Lim Yap and Leialoha Amina, they have participated in the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and traveled to Japan, New Zealand, Tahiti, Taiwan and all across the U.S.
