Hawaii ranks second nationwide in AP exam performance growth

The Hawaii Department of Education reports the number of students both taking and passing Advanced Placement Program exams is increasing. Records show 4,141 Hawaii public high school seniors in the graduating class of 2018 took an AP exam while in high school, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the previous year.

Of those graduating seniors, 1,908 scored 3 or higher on an AP exam, an increase of 1.9 percentage points over the previous year. This increase was the second-highest, one-year gain nationwide, behind only the District of Columbia’s increase of 2.8 percentage points. Compared to the nation, Hawaii ranks fifth in score improvements over three years, up 3.9 percentage points, and ninth over five years, with an increase of 5.4 percentage points.

Over 10 years, Hawaii ranks twelfth nationwide in score improvements with a growth of 9.5 percentage points.
