“New Surf Board Shop Now In Operation”

By Jim Langdon

Big Island Surf Shop, a two-man factory located at upper Keauhou, opens — bringing to West Hawaii its first local manufacturer of surf boards.

Heading into the enterprise is a brother-in-law team of avid surfers, John Thurston of Lahaina, Maui, whose parents live in Kailua-Kona, and Walter Aniban, a native Konan.

Thurston, 27, owns and operates the Lahaina Pacific Surf Shop on Maui and has been making surf boards off and on for the past 10 years beginning in Southern California. Prior to going into business with his brother-in-law, Aniban, also 27, made only his own surf boards. Aniban is also president of the Kona Surfing Association.

The shop operates out of the Aniban residence garage area. The foam used for the interior of the boards is ordered from California, while the builders obtain their fiberglass on order from Honolulu. But the actual construction, design and finishing is all done here in Kona. New surf boards are going for about $130.

“Lions To Sell Brooms”

The broom sale is held on a two-fold purpose basis; money-making for the scholarship fund and helping Hoopono broom factory, a visual handicap project.
