KAILUA-KONA — Fifteen people were evacuated from a Hawi hotel after a fire erupted from an adjoining historic building overnight, officials confirmed this morning.

At approximately 11:23 p.m. Wednesday, Hawaii Fire crews received a call about a structure at Kohala Village Inn & Hub. When they arrived on scene, firefighters found the interior of the structure fully involved with flames through the roof.

The historic building and restaurant with adjoining hotel as well as multiple business establishments were caught up in the blaze. Fifteen guests were evacuated from the hotel, officials say.

“Roof partially collapsed, all exterior walls and most interior walls still intact,” fire officials say.

The flames were contained to the involved structure using three turrets and multiple handlines. To get to the seat of the fire, officials say, crews made entry in the center of the building.

Crews are still on scene and cause is currently under investigation. Officials estimate $1 million in damages.

No injuries were reported. Twenty-two firefighters responded to battle the blaze, which was contained at 3:27 a.m.

This is a developing story. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
