Astronomy talk at the Gates Performing Arts Center, HPA campus, 7-8 p.m. with guest speaker Marusa Bradac, associate physics professor at UC Davis, sharing information on using Keck telescopes to study the first galaxies.
One of the greatest accomplishments in recent astrophysics is the creation of a model for the history of the universe. The newborn universe was a dark place until the very first galaxies lit it up. Travel at the speed of light to journey back in time and experience how astronomers use the Keck Telescopes to study the first galaxies. You’ll witness how they formed in the universe, ending the cosmic dark ages and shedding light about the origin of the galaxy we live in.

Rep. Nicole Lowen speaks at League of Women Voters
At its April 6 meeting, The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Hawaii County hosts guest speaker Nicole Lowen, state representative for House District 6, which includes Kailua-Kona and Holualoa, speaking on the priorities of the 30th session of the Hawaii State Legislature. The LWV meeting will be held at the St. James Episcopal Church, 65-1237 Kawaihae Road, Kamuela.
Registration is 9:30 a.m., with a business meeting and program planning session at 10 a.m. Lowen’s talk starts at 11 a.m.; lunch ($10 payable at the door) and a board meeting follow.

Taste of the Hawaiian Range Sept. 7
Taste of the Hawaiian Range is Saturday, Sept. 7 at Mana Christian ‘Ohana (Old Kahilu Town Hall) and the adjacent YMCA Minuke Ole Park in Waimea. It will again offer daytime agricultural-themed activities before culminating with an evening tasting event showcasing locally produced food.
Outdoor fun is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the YMCA Minuke Ole Park behind Parker Ranch Center. Geared for families, it includes educational exhibits and vendors offering products using locally sourced plants and animals. Attendees can view livestock animals provided by 4-H; horseback rides will be available for a nominal fee. Children can pedal their own kid-sized tractor, use tiny farm tools, plant a seed to take home and grow, “milk” a hand-painted replica of a Holstein cow, and see displays of live chicks and thriving vegetable plants. Daytime admission is free.
The ticketed Taste gala is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Enjoy local, pasture-raised meats and produce prepared by Hawaii Island chefs and culinary students for $50 presale and $60 at the door.
