The Super American Circus comes to Kona

Showmakers, Inc. presents The Super American Circus 2019 Hawaii Tour. This modern one-ring circus will showcase some of the best acts in the world at Kealakehe High School this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The superhero theme and thrilling acts will include Elaine Alcon (superhero performing aerial ballet on the Spanish web), the Martin Espana Show featuring The Cyclone (motorcycle stunts and summersaults on an elevated circular platform) and the Russian Swing, the Wheel of Danger (world-renown clown Martin Espana performing incredible acts on a revolving wheel four stories high), Tino Ferreira – Rolla Bolla (balancing act on stacks of cylinders), Ruslan – Tower of Chairs (chair stacking act) along with Ringmaster Molly.

Nonprofit Kamaaina Kids will benefit from every ticket sold. Families will be delighted with the pre-show and intermission activities including photos with superhero characters, face painting and more. Traditional treats such as snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn will be available.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday; noon, 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets prices vary.

Aloha Theatre’s annual gala celebrates theatre family

The Aloha Theatre is proud to present a gala special performance, “Celebrate Ohana,” an evening benefiting West Hawaii’s historic performing arts space.

Join the theatre in celebrating the Aloha Theatre family with giveaways, live auction, special performances and the announcement of the Aloha Theatre’s 2019-2020 mainstage season. Performers from the sellout shows “The Addams Family” and “Mamma Mia!” will lead a fabulous cast in a night of singing, dancing, laughter and drama. This year’s gala features prize giveaways from local favorites — coffee, restaurants, activities and more — along with a live auction of exciting packages for mauka to makai adventures.

The Aloha Theatre has enriched the lives of Hawaii residents and visitors by providing quality live theatre, performing arts education, and a venue for artistic expression more than 30 years. The annual gala raises critical funds to assist in continuing quality programming and to maintain the Aloha Theatre.

Kahilu Theatre announces camps and workshops for summer 2019

Starting on June 24, Kahilu Theatre is hosting a series of summer camps and workshops for the keiki of our community.

Kahilu Theatre values education at its core and is privileged to partner with artists, educators, and organizations that share that same commitment to strengthen the influence of art in everyday life. Musical Theatre Performance Camp

June 24-29 | 9:30-3:30 p.m. | middle school age

Directed by Peter Vamvakas, Harmony High is a musical where every class and extra-curricular activity is abuzz with music and song and reinforces the importance of the role of music in our lives at school and everywhere.

Young performers will be rehearsing and performing in a musical revue; singing and dancing in full choreographed musical numbers. Performance will be Saturday, June 29, at 11 a.m.

Kahilu Performing Arts Workshop (KPAW)

July 1-5 and July 8-11 | 9:30-3:30 p.m. | Ages 6-11

Directed by Marena Dunnington, KPAW is a nine-day musical theatre camp that focuses on singing, acting, and dancing. Members and alumni of the Kahilu Youth Troupe lead classes as the students learn about different aspects of theatre.

Summer Circus Arts Camp

July 15-19 | 9:30-3:30 pm. | Ages 7-17

Directed by aerialist Alea Backus, with instructors Kat Ruess, Ray Riviera, and Victor and Lucky Friend. Come have fun and learn a variety of challenging skills to build confidence and coordination in a social circus setting. Classes include individual, group, and partner acrobatics, base tumbling skills, aerial silks, dance trapeze, plate spinning, unicycling, poi spinning, and juggling as well as theatre arts and cooperative games.

Limited scholarship funds are available through the Kahilu Theatre Scholarship Committee. Applications for financial aid can be found on the class registration site.

Poetry reading at VAC

Join authors Joseph Harrington and Susan M. Schultz for an evening of poetry at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Harrington will read from his book, “Of Some Sky,” new ghost pieces, and “Things Come On,” a mixed-genre work relating the twinned narratives of the Watergate scandal and his mother’s cancer.

Schultz will read from her book “The Viewpoint is Presumption,” a collection of doctored Trump tweets, and from her forthcoming book, “I Want to Write an Honest Sentence.”

This presentation is free, although a $5 donation is greatly appreciated.
