Police arrest 17 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 18 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested nine drivers, South Hilo officers five and South Kohala officers two, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Puna arrested one motorist.

So far this year, there have been 284 DUI arrests compared with 252 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 220 major accidents so far this year compared with 301 during the same period last year.

Three fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday, police said. By this time in 2018, seven people had perished.
