Early Music Hawaii presents the concert “Brazil, Baroque and Beyond” at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Queen Emma Community Center on Konawaena Road in Kealakekua.

Guest artists and recorder professionals Cléa Galhano and Vicki Boeckman will join well-known local vocalists Wendy Buzby and Dan Garrett in an exciting concert of Baroque arias and sonatas as well as contemporary Brazilian compositions.

Brazilian recorder player Galhano is an internationally renowned performer of early, contemporary and Brazilian music. As a featured soloist, Galhano has worked with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, New World Symphony, Musical Offering and Lyra Baroque Orchestra. Currently, she is the executive artistic director of the St. Paul Conservatory of Music and a faculty member at Macalester College, music director of the Recorder Orchestra of the Midwest, and has been recently appointed adjunct lecturer in Music, Recorder at HPI, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University.

Boeckman taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen for 12 years, and at the Ishøj Municipal School of Music for 23 years. She co-founded a regional recorder youth orchestra which continues to flourish and grow in Denmark. Her students from the Royal Academy are all now professional performers and teachers passing on the tradition. She was also co-founder of two Danish-based ensembles, Opus 4, and Wood’N’Flutes, and continues to perform with both of these ensembles as often as she can, in spite of the geography.

Buzby and Garrett have been received with acclaim by audiences of Kona Choral Society, particularly their solo performances in Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem. Come hear them sing with guest artists Galhano and Boeckman, recorders, Jieun Kim Newland, harpsichord, and Anna Callner, viola da gamba.

Info: Tickets are $20 ($8 for students with ID) at the door or online at earlymusichawaii.com.
