Explosive removal plan meeting in Waikoloa
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District is hosting a public meeting for the former Waikoloa Maneuver Area Sectors 17A, 17B, 17C, 17E and 17F, South Kohala, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, 69-275 Waikoloa Beach Dr., Waikoloa Village.
The area comprised of sectors 17A, 17B, 17C, 17E and 17F located along the coastline to the west of Waikoloa Village is a formerly used defense site. A map showing the location of the sectors is available online: http://www.poh.usace.army.mil/Missions/Environmental/FUDS/Waikoloa.asx
At the meeting USACE will present the proposed plan’s preferred remedial action alternative: Surface and Subsurface Munitions and Explosives of Concern removal in the unobstructed portions of the 401.4 acres comprised of various area throughout the munitions response site.
The plan will be available today for public review at the Thelma Parker Memorial Community Library in Waimea.
Self-publishing workshop April 17
Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library of the Hawaii State Public Library System will host a writers workshop, Self-Publishing 101, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, in the library meeting room. The event is free and open to the public.
Sam Cudney, a Hawaii Island-based freelance editor and writer with a background in non-fiction and technical writing, will lead the workshop. Cudney has published several books for himself and others, including a book on self-publishing, How to Publish Your Book for Free. The workshop will demonstrate in detail the intricacies of the self-publishing process using readily-available tools. Participants will learn how to format their work for both e-book and print.

Open Call for Island Artists
The Waimea Arts Council invites island artists and fine craftsmen to submit work for a Juried Fine Art Show to be held at the Firehouse Gallery during the month of April. The theme of this show is “Portal.” Prizes totaling over $1,000 will be offered and the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts will be visiting to purchase art for the Hawaii State Museum art collection. Beginning and seasoned artists are encouraged to enter.
Why a theme? Choosing one encourages everyone to think beyond the scope of artist’s current work and usual themes. So what does “Portal” mean? Get out your dictionary and thesaurus and look it up. There are a lot of interpretations to choose from. Doing something so very different, if only via imagery and not new technique, can open creative gates you didn’t realize were in place.
Take-in dates for entries are Thursday through Saturday. Artists can enter pieces in Hilo on April 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the former location of Central Supply, 31A Makaala Street. Kona entries will be accepted on Friday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kona Frame Shop in the old industrial area, 74-5484 Kawai Street. North Hawaii artists can submit pieces at the Firehouse Gallery in Kamuela, 67-1201 Mamalahoa Highway, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Sally French, a well-known artist from Kauai, will jury this collection choosing the prize winners. Cash awards will be announced at the reception on Saturday, April 13. Non-refundable entry fees are based on a sliding scale: One piece – $30; Two pieces – $50; Three pieces – $60.

Benson earns dean’s list
Endicott College in Massachusetts announced Ada Benson of Waimea earned spot on the dean’s list for fall 2018.
In order to qualify for the dean’s list, a student must obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.5, receive no grade below a C, have no withdrawal grades, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for the semester.
Benson is majoring in nursing and is the daughter of Carl Benson and Cristina Yohon.
