Winners of the winter wood show announced
For 30 years, Harbor Gallery has supported over 200 local, Big Island artists, and for the last 10 years, has displayed the works of local artists in wood with summer and winter wood shows.
The results have been tabulated from the recent Winter Wood Show, and the following winners of each category have been selected by the public after hundreds of ballots have been cast.
Best of show, with the most votes overall, regardless of category, was a sculptural piece by Scott Hare of a plumeria carved out of a single piece of Cuban mahogany. The piece is still available for sale.
First place, open category, was a wood-burned oil painting titled “Hawaii Map – Return Voyage 2” by David Gallegos featuring a depiction of a double outrigger sailing canoe overlaying a map of the islands with a figure blowing a conch shell.
First place in joinery was a curly koa wood jewelry chest made by Tom Pasquale.
First place in turning was John Mydock’s detailed piece illustrating a pueo in the center, made from Norfolk Island pine, and titled “Habitat On Fire,” alluding to the displaced homes of native creatures due to the recent lava eruption.
First place in sculpture was Craig Nichols’ moving piece of a Hawaiian green sea turtle gliding through the ocean, carved out of koa.
Attend Art-After-Dark
This Friday, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Holualoa Village galleries will feature new art and artists, tasty street eats and music all along Mamalahoa Highway with the April edition of their monthly Art-After-Dark event.
The village block party features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is free, and for all ages.
Holualoa Gallery will be featuring two Darrell Hill originals this month and artist William Wingert will be in the gallery painting live, with the musical John Collins and a special guest performing out front.
This will be the final First Friday for Joaquin and Bethany of Kona Dogs, who will be moving on to a new chapter in their lives soon. Don’t miss this final opportunity to enjoy their gourmet street eats as you stroll the village.
Dave Lawrence is playing classic rock n’ roll at Koa Realty and Holualoa Ukelele Gallery will host event regulars Mauna Highnotes.
Dr. Tim and Mike Rosato will be playing in front of Ipu Arts Plus Gallery, at the north end of Holualoa.
Pat Pearlman Designs is featuring original design necklaces, earrings and bracelets of the April birthstone, pearls. See freshwater, saltwater, and all colors, shapes sizes and prices of pearls in the gallery in the historic pink Kona Hotel.
Glyph Art Gallery will be featuring five new colorflow paintings, using resin, koa and mango, from Hawi artist Timothy Allan Shafto. His unique pieces combine these materials in new ways that appeal to contemporary taste, but are classically beautiful. Sundog Bread will be offering their fresh baked goods, still warm from the oven, in front of the gallery.
Blue Sea Artisans featured artist in April is Mark Martel
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artist for the month of March is fine artist and illustrator Mark Martel.
Martel is a fine artist, illustrator and writer who lives in Captain Cook. Over a long career as a designer and art director, Martel evolved from advertising graphics toward illustration and fine art, from working for corporations to creating art for individuals and collectors. His work has appeared in nearly half the states and a dozen countries.
To meet the artist and learn more about his work, he’ll be working at the gallery from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, April 25.

Kailua Village Artists featured artist is Stefanie Culbertson
Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of April is watercolor painter and digital designer Stefanie Culbertson. She has been painting with watercolors since she first moved to Hawaii in 1989 from Germany. Her fascination with the lush beauty of this island still inspires her art and she has grown deep roots here.
Among the new paintings Culbertson will be featuring this month is the “Tree of Life.” The painting was inspired by the cycle of the life force sustaining us all. The process of photosynthesis of the trees and plants is a fragile and necessary balance that interconnects us all.
To meet the artist and learn more about her latest works, Culbertson will be working at the gallery on Saturday and April 20.
