Kona Choral Society benefit concert this weekend
A benefit concert for Kona Choral Society, called Rhapsody by the Bay, will take place 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Mi’s Waterfront Bistro on Alii Drive.
The concert will feature soloists Dan Garrett, Wendy Buzby, Bernaldo Evangelista and Amy Mills.
Tickets are $100, and the price of the ticket includes one beverage and pupus. A silent auction will also be held.

Uma Zuma Band to be featured at Gertrude’s
Uma Zuma band will be playing at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar on Alii Drive at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Four local Big Island residents form the Uma Zuma Band, or “UZB” for short. The drummer, Bruce David, and guitarist, vocalist, Steve Fundy, both hail from Pahoa, while Uma, on vocals and ukulele, and Dave Ojeda, on bass and vocals, live in Kailua-Kona. This group features rock, Top 40, soul, R&B, reggae, with all danceable tunes.
The set lists include tunes by Led Zeppelin, INXS, Aretha Franklin, Staple Singers, Eurythmics, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger, Meghan Trainor, Jason Mraz, Rolling Stones, Jesse J., Stevie Wonder, James Brown, No Doubt, The Beatles, and Robert Palmer.
While Uma has sung at Gertrude’s previously with her jazz band and the Uma Zuma Duo and Trio, with Nick Wong on drums, this is the first time her new four-piece rock line up performs at Gertrude’s.
The band will also be performing from 7-10 p.m. June 1 at Laverne’s Sports Bar.

Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble holds final concert of season
Ohrlando’s last program in the 2018-19 series is dedicated to the Baroque and early classic period, the high period of the harpsichord.
Barbara Cofman on flute will join the group as she has done several times since Ohrlando started his series six years ago. Roland Maurer will be on oboe, oboe d’amore, and bassoon, and Ursula Hesse will be on harpsichord.
The concert will be performed 3 p.m. Sunday at a private residence in Kailua-Kona. A $20 donation per person is welcome.
Georg Friedrich Handel, one of the most famous figures in the Baroque era, is represented with a triosonata, a flute sonata and a sparkling harpsichord piece. Another trio by Johann David Heinichen will be heard with the sweet sound of the oboe d’amore. Two interludes from 1946 by Jacques Ibert with a Spanish touch will make a contrast. The program finishes with some brilliant harpsichord solos in a trio composition by François Devienne, also sometimes called “the French Mozart.”

Soft pastel still life workshop at Volcano Art Center
Big Island artist and instructor Patti Pease Johnson can help you gain the confidence and techniques of the centuries-old medium of soft pastel still life. Johnson supplies the instruction and materials along with guidance and inspiration for this process along with some handy tips for your creative journey.
Learn about the different types of pastels, different papers, fixing and mounting paper and on backing. Then use newsprint to get the flow of arm movements to keep loose. Next, you’ll begin forming shapes and move into colors on pastel paper from close observation of the setup still life. Students will complete a 9×12 inch project.
The workshop will be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Volcano Art Center. Cost for the workshop is $50 and $45 for VAC Members plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome.

Donkey Mill Art Center on break
Donkey Mill Art Center will be closed to the general public April 14 through May 14.
Open studio hours for ceramics, metals, and print students will be ongoing during the break. The center will also reopen in that time for two previously scheduled movie nights.
The Donkey Mill team will use the break to step into new roles and focus on further analyzing and redesigning the programs schedule and fundraising events, including the introduction of a semester schedule with a defined class/workshop proposal period and registration start date.
