Police nab 16 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 8 and Sunday. Five of the 25 drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested seven drivers, South Kohala officers four and South Hilo officers three, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Puna arrested two motorists.

So far this year, there have been 336 DUI arrests compared with 324 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 274 major accidents so far this year compared with 379 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2018, seven people had perished.
