Kang Tjhio

Kang Hoay Benny Tjhio; 86, of Hilo, died April 22, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 25, 1932, in Krawang, Java, Indonesia, he was a graduate of the Technical Institute in Bandung, Indonesia, Kings College in Cambridge, U.K., and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a research scientist, he retired to Hilo.

No services are planned at this time.

Survived by wife, Jayne Vercnocke of Hilo; sister, Derry Mahardi of Jakarta, Java; many nieces and nephews.

Jay Hanson

Jay Hanson, 75, of Kailua-Kona, died March 30, 2019, in Indonesia. Born April 16, 1943, he was a retired software engineer, and an avid diver and sailor.

Private services will be held.

Survived by wife, Phyllis Hanson of Kailua-Kona; son, Jayson (Michele) Hanson of Mission Viejo, Calif.; brother, Jeff (Louise) Hanson of Atascadero, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Howard Fujioka

Howard Tadashi Fujioka, 75, of Hilo, died April 17, 2019, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Laupahoehoe Nov. 10, 1943, he was formerly employed as a supervisor as the Ookala Mill and Haina Mill and retired from the Jas. W. Glover, Ltd. Co. as a repair shop supervisor.

Visitation will be held at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo 4-5 p.m. May 1; memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. Casual attire is requested.

Survived by wife, Julie Aguinaldo Fujioka of Hilo; son, Garrett S. Fujioka of Hilo; brother, Harvey (Sharon) Fujioka of Mililani; sister, Janis (Paul) Picone of Kaneohe; hanai sons, Jon Carpio of Georgia and Jed Carpio of Nebraska; five brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; one grandson; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Irene Visaya

Irene Rosita Mata Visaya, 90, of Waimea, died March 15, 2019, at The Queen’s Medical Center Oahu. She was a homemaker.

A celebration of life will be held 11:30 a.m. May 5 at Ainaola Park.

Survived by sons, Eddie Alan (Paulette) Familar of Hilo, Rudy (Jean) Familar of Waimea; daughters Gaby (Miles) Kunishige and Lisa Conn of Waimea; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Shannon Mathias

Shannon Galedean Kauinohea Mathias, 49, of Pahoa, died March 13, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 29, 1969, on Oahu, she was a homemaker.

Survived by companion, John Alan Hernandez of Pahoa; mother, Angela L. Hernandez; sons, Andrew (Aeisha Mattos) Mathias-Howard, Joshua Mathias, Jason Mathias all of Puna; daughter, Johnnlyn Mathias of Puna; brothers, Randall (Renee) Arita of Honolulu, Gaylord Mathias of Las Vegas, Ivanhoe (Lorna) Mathias of Maui, Stirling (Colleen Thomas) Mathias of Puna, Wendell (Noe) Kalua Sr. of Las Vegas; sisters, Angline Arita of Reno, Jill (Ted) Lyau of Waimea, Shyanne (Valu) Mathias-Valu of Puna; two grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins.
