Police nab 16 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 22 and Sunday. Six drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested six drivers, South Hilo officers five and Puna officers two, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Hamakua, South Kohala and North Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.

So far this year, there have been 373 DUI arrests compared with 371 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 308 major accidents so far this year compared with 426 during the same period last year.

Six fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2018, eight people had perished.
