A water main break in North Kohala on Monday forced the closure of Kohala Elementary, Middle and High Schools.

North Kohala customers in the Hawi and Kapaau area experienced a disruption in service while Department of Water Supply personnel repaired a water main break near the intersection of Akoni Pule Highway and Honomakau Road.

Temporary spigots were set up on Akoni Pule Highway while repairs were being made.

DWS Deputy Kawika Uyehara attributed the break to aging infrastructure and normal wear and tear.

“Kudos to our guys who worked as quickly as they did to restore service,” Uyehara said.

Repairs were complete and water restored by 3:30 p.m. All the schools will reopen today.
