KEALAKEKUA — Preliminary hearing proceedings for a 19-year-old woman accused of murder have been waived pending a mental health examination.
On Wednesday afternoon, Kaleianuenue Borero-Kaluna, of Naalehu, appeared in Kona District Court on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. Offenses stem from a stabbing at Whittington Beach Park in Naalehu Friday afternoon.
Deputy Public Defender Ann Datta moved to waive proceedings to allow for a mental health examination to be completed.
Deputy Prosecutor Stephen Frye had no objection.
District Court Judge Margaret Masunaga granted Datta’s motion, and a hearing to review doctor’s reports has been scheduled for June 19.
Hawaii Police first responded to the reported stabbing on Friday around 3:40 p.m. at Whittington Beach Park. When they arrived on scene, officers found two victims, a 36-year-old man and 35-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.
According to the probable cause statement, the man suffered injuries to his shoulder, right rib/torso area and his right hip area.
Next to the 36-year-old was the woman, later identified as Marie Lyn Boyles in the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s official complaint against Borero-Kaluna.
According to the probable cause document, Boyles was resting on her left side and “observed to be laying in a large pool of blood.”
The woman died at the scene. The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition. As of Monday, the victim was stable and continues to be treated for his injuries at the hospital.
The man told police he and Boyles were attacked by his girlfriend, who was wielding a 6- to 8-inch fixed-blade knife, the probable cause statement indicated. Borero-Kaluna was later identified to be the suspect.
According to witnesses, Borero-Kaluna left the scene with another individual in a red pickup truck. The vehicle, occupied by 69-year-old Robert Hayes, was eventually located at Punaluu Beach Park that same afternoon.
Hayes was also arrested on Friday but ultimately released pending further investigation.
Borero-Kaluna turned herself in at the Naalehu Police Station that evening at 5:05 p.m.
Borero-Kaluna, who is eight months pregnant, is currently being held at Hawaii Community Correctional Center on $150,000 bail.
