Audition for ‘James and the Giant Peach’ with Waimea Community Theatre
Waimea Community Theatre is at it again. This time, they bring the community the delightful tale of James, who is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree. When he arrives, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach which launches a journey of enormous proportions.
Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building.
Actors, dancers, and singers of all ages are welcome to audition for this musical adventure based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story.
Auditions to be held at the Honokaa People’s Theatre in Honokaa at 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Wear clothing that allows you to move, and come with a smile. Those auditioning should arrive no later than 10 minutes prior to the start of auditions.
“James and the Giant Peach” is directed by Rich Givens, with musical direction by Christopher Tomich.
Waimea Community Theatre is also currently looking for sponsors for this latest production.

Scholarship deadlines extended for keiki and teen summer art camp
The Donkey Mill Art Center invites families to apply for scholarships to their annual Summer Art Experience program, a five-week art intensive held at our facility June 10 through July 12 for students ages 6-16.
Students will create and explore through a variety of mediums, and receive projects appropriate to their age level including weaving, fiber arts, design, sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, dance, writing, and more. Each week offers a new theme, hands-on projects, and new materials and challenges to explore.
Generous donors help make it possible for young artists to attend art classes and programs at the Donkey Mill, and the deadline to submit scholarships for both keiki and teen students has been extended to May 22.

Volcano artist wins national art contest
Volcano artist Marian Berger was awarded the NSDAR Women in the Arts Recognition Award on Saturday in Bend, Oregon.
Berger was nominated by the American Heritage Committee of the Hawaii Loa Chapter NSDAR, along with letters of support from Emily Catey Weiss of the Volcano Art Center and Codie King of the Wailoa Center. Considered the “modern Audubon of Hawaiian birds” for her life-like paintings and pastels, Berger was honored for her outstanding contribution, beyond mere mastery of technique, in wildlife art.
She received an award certificate and pin, plus a $100 monetary award and an orchid lei sent by Hawaii Loa members. Berger is currently preparing for an upcoming show at Volcano Art Center in May 2020.
