Brumbaugh, Nakamura receive FOLK scholarships
Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K.) has awarded $6,000 in scholarships to two individuals to pursue master’s degrees in library and information science. Scholarship recipients are Penny Brumbaugh and Stephanie Nakamura.
Brumbaugh, of Kailua-Kona, is continuing her studies through the University of Hawaii distance learning master’s program. Nakamura is entering the distance learning master’s degree program this fall at Rutgers School of Communication and Information.
WHEA takes out the trash
Sixth-graders at West Hawaii Explorations Academy recently partnered with the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation and Kohanaiki Ohana from May 5-7 for an outing of low-impact camping, a beach cleanup and invasive species eradication. Over the two-night trip that included 30 children and 12 adults, plus a potluck with 70 people, the group created just a single small bag of trash.
The students also worked for seven hours eradicating weeds and ended the trip with a big beach cleanup of the bay on the last morning.
“These kids truly have started a legacy and partnership that will continue, and we will malama Kohanaiki for years and years to come,” wrote Shawna Sale and Kater Hiney, teachers at the school.
