“J. Copp Wins Troller Tourney ”

With total weight the determining factor in last weekend’s Kona Mauka Trollers Spring tournament, Jerry Copp, captain of the Pee Gee team, was declared winner in the rolling division with 247 pounds of aku.
Mixed game fish catches prevailed during the two-day meet with 26 teams entered in the trolling division and seven in the handline division.
In the handline division, Richard Yano took the top position with 657 pounds over the two days.
The tourney is a warm up for the Invitational July 4-6 and was dedicated to the 10 original charter members who started the Kona Mauka Trollers in 1959. Today (1969), the trollers boast a membership over 300.

Capt. Rope Nelson and his charter cruiser Kona Queen have rejoined the local charter fleet after a four-month contract with 20th Century Fox in the filming of “Tora Tora.”
“‘Old Hawaii On Horseback’ Attracts 3,000”

Under sunny Waimea skies, some 3,000 persons, young and old, kamaaina and malahini, witnessed a colorful pageant on horseback at Anna Ranch. Written by Mrs. Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske, owner of the ranch, “Old Hawaii On Horseback” depicts the history of the area as it relates to horses. It is an annual benefit for the Hawaii Heart Association.

“Digging In”

Groundbreaking ceremonies have been held for Bank of Hawaii’s new $750,000 Kailua-Kona branch at the intersection of Hualalai Road and Kuakini Highway. The branch could be open by Christmas.
The new bank, designed to service the needs of a booming Kailua, will feature a drive-in window, a night depository box and safe deposit boxes. It will also come equipped with its own apartment house to be built adjacent to the bank site. The complex will include eight dwelling units in all; a pair of two bedroom units and six studio-type units.
“Seal Contest Is Announced”

A contest for a new design of the county seal is being sponsored by the County Council. In designing a new seal, one must take into consideration the possible features of the six districts, the mountains or volcanoes, important industries, and the Hawaiian or ethnic blend.
Open to Hawaii County residents only, two panels of judges will screen the entries. Ten semifinalists will be selected and their efforts will be forwarded to Honolulu to a panel of three judges for an unbiased final choice.
The council ordered the new seal to reflect changes in government under the charter. The original seal was adopted in 1905 and its wording was changed in 1959 to recognize statehood.
The prize will be $100 and a 6-inch relief of the winning drawing. Deadline to submit is June 6, 1969.
