Privateer’s Cove to host group All That Is Now

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Big Island performance group All That is Now is bringing the progressive psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” album to Kona with an appearance at Privateer’s Cove.

Formerly recognized as the Hualalai Theatre, the theatre within Privateer’s Cove is a part of the Pirates Outreach Community Center, a venture taken on by the restaurant’s owner to give all generations a space to experience the arts.

When Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” album was released in 1973, it was an enormous success: with the album selling 45 million copies worldwide and remaining on the Billboard charts for almost two decades, it became internationally recognized as a musical masterpiece. The love of the album remains to this day, a passion for which inspired the creation of All That is Now, a collaboration of 11 Big Island musicians in an effort to replicate an album made eternally famous by Pink Floyd.

All That is Now is comprised of Dan Brauer on guitar and vocals, Lee Glennan on vocals, Robby Malovic on bass, Chris Wilson on drums, Jocelyn Michelle on Hammond organ, Scott Van Spronsen on keyboard, Lauren Broido on slide guitar, Ian Work on saxophone, and Stephanie Lou Tatum, Cayenne Clarke and Alicia Maher on vocals.

Info: Tickets to the Privateer’s Cove are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, and can be found at www.ldtband.com. The entirety of the album will be performed.

Auditions announced for ‘A Cage of Fireflies’ at the Aloha

Aloha Theatre, a community theatre company and performance venue based in Kainaliu, will hold open auditions for volunteer actors for “A Cage of Fireflies,” an original play by Honolulu playwright Daniel Akiyama, at 6 p.m. June 10 and June 11 in Damron Hall, the building adjacent to the Aloha Theatre parking lot.

Arrive by 5:45 p.m. to complete required audition paperwork. If necessary, an invitational call back will be held on Thursday, June 13, also at 6 p.m. Production dates are Aug. 16 to Sept. 1. Candidates should prepare a three to five minute monologue to present for the audition. Auditions will also consist of reading from the script. Those auditioning should allow at least two hours for the entirety of the audition and wear closed-toe shoes.

“A Cage of Fireflies,” directed by Dance Aoki, is the inaugural show in the annual series of Pacific-based performances, Aloha Theatre’s “Voices from the Ring of Fire Series.” The play tells the story of three elderly sisters of the kibei generation: sent as children to be raised in Okinawa, then returned to live and work in Hawaii. Two of the sisters confine themselves to their Honolulu apartment where they enact the rituals of daily life and dream of one day returning to Okinawa. The third, charged with running their family’s orchid nursery, embraces the modern world and disrupts her family’s fragile traditions. As long-hidden hopes, resentments and regrets surface, the sisters must confront the nature of their love for each other.

“A Cage of Fireflies” explores the tug-of-war between progress and preservation, the selfish and the selfless. There are three female roles: Yukiko, the eldest sister of the family of three sisters, has a deep longing to return home to Okinawa, age 75-77; Mitsuko, the middle sister of the family, is also matriarch of her own family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, age 70-72; and Kimiko, the youngest sister of the family, age 68-70, lives with Yukiko and is dedicated to taking care of her oldest sister. All roles are available.

The cast will initially meet twice, June 17 and June 18, and then regular rehearsals will commence June 23. Rehearsals will generally be conducted Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings. Cast members must be available for the entire rehearsal schedule with a minimum number of conflicts, and must commit to the entire performance run. The rehearsal and performance schedule is posted online, and will be posted at auditions as well. An optional “A Cage of Fireflies” boot camp will be offered 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 25, in Damron Hall. This is a workshop designed to familiarize possible cast members with the play, and prepare them for auditions.

Info: Scripts are available at the Aloha Theatre office; call 322-9924 to arrange a checkout.
