“New Eruptions Color Kona Skies; Crater Road Again Victim”

No byline

The world’s most active volcano, Kilauea, was at it again this past weekend, and the result in Kona was a return to hot and hazy volcano weather.

Madame Pele’s latest outburst began in the predawn hours Saturday near Aloi Crater after a week of warnings in the form of increased earthquake activity.

The eruptions occurred in the same general area as the Feb. 22 George Washington’s Birthday fireworks, and once again the molten fingers of lava tore into sections of Chain of Craters Road.

The whimsical Pele also added a second Parks Service vehicle to her collection, stranding Ranger Lee Shackleton at Kinahou Ranch.

Shackleton and the ranch caretaker made their escape by jeep via another route, but the Park vehicle had to be abandoned, the same as the time before when Ranger Ted Picco had to be airlifted from the lava flow area by helicopter.

By week’s end, however, activity had quieted down considerably. But her effects on Kona’s weather promised to linger on for a few days at least.
