KAILUA-KONA — A woman in her 20s was hospitalized Friday after going over the falls at Rainbow Falls in Hilo.

Responding to the 1:46 p.m. Friday call, Hawaii Fire Department fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene to find the woman out of the water and on the northern bank of the pond below the falls. She had apparently went over the falls and fell into the water but was able to get to the edge of Wailuku River.

A rescue specialist was assigned to swim out to the woman and conduct a patient assessment. She was then airlifted via Chopper 2 using a Billy Pugh net to an awaiting ambulance, treated and transported to Hilo Medical Center.

No additional details on the woman’s condition were immediately available.
