Police arrest 25 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 3 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and three were younger than age 21.

South Hilo and Puna officers arrested eight motorists in each district while Kona officers nabbed seven drivers, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested two motorists.

So far this year, there have been 516 DUI arrests compared with 510 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 399 major accidents so far this year compared with 585 during the same period last year.

Eleven fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Wednesday morning, police said. By this time in 2018, 15 people had perished.
