Abjang Ebot

Abjang Ebot, 79, of Kona, died June 18, 2019, at home. Born Sept. 18, 1939, in Mejit, Marshall Islands, he was a pastor and member of BNJ Marshallese First International Church.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 5 at BNJ Marshallese First International Church in Kailua-Kona, 74-5596 Pawai Place, for an all-night vigil. Friends may again call 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 6 at the church for a funeral service. Burial follows at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. The family requests casual attire be worn and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by wife, Ezra Ebot of Kona; sons, Randy (Jocelyn) Ebot of Majuro, the Marshall Islands, Carlson (Jacqueline) Ebot of Hilo, Absen (Sherlina) Ebot of Oahu, Houston (Elmita) Ebot, Abjang (Aritha) Ebot Jr. and Dick (Irene) Ebot of Kona; daughters, Catherine (Ranson) Lolin of Hilo, Chianna (Livai) Mongkeya and Jessica (Bratly) Joram of Kona, Jessita (Jimmy) Lakmis of Oahu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eugene Penrose

Eugene “Skip” Barton Penrose, 83, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 2, 2019, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born April 18, 1935, in San Diego, he was a taxi driver in Alaska, member of the Elks Club and the Shriners organization and a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as a staff sergeant.

Graveside service was held Monday at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona.

He is survived by wife, Margaret Spinney Penrose of Kailua-Kona; stepson, Michael (Adeline) Silva of Kailua-Kona; five step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Violet Ramirez

Violet “Vie” Ruth Mata Ramirez, 84, of Kailua-Kona, died June 24, 2019, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born May 7, 1935, in Hamakua, she was a retired waitress.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. July 14 at Hilo Women’s Club. Service begins at 11:30 a.m. Luncheon to follow. Family requests no flowers. For information call Felix at (808) 937-6912.

She is survived by daughters, Sylvia (Drew) Cordeiro of Keaau, Donna Darakjian; sons, Felix (Donna) Estabilio Jr. all of Kailua-Kona, Jon Estabilio Sr. of Pahala, Delis (Laureen) Estabilio Sr. of Hilo; brothers, Albert (Mary) Mata of Honolulu, James (Donna Bailey) Mata of California; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Samuel Akina

Samuel Kaomi Akina, 74, of Hilo, died June 16, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 21, 1945, on Oahu, he was a heavy equipment operator.

Hilo services to be held at 3 p.m. July 5 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo, 570 Kinoole St. in Hilo. Viewing begins at 2:30 p.m. Oahu services to be held 11 a.m. July 13 at Laie North Stake Center, 55-103 Lanihuli St. in Laie. Visitation begins at 10 a.m.

He is survived by spouse, Wilhelmina Akina of Hilo; mother, Dora Akina of Oahu; hanai sons, Lawrence Akina of Oahu, Daniel Dayoan of Hilo; stepsons, Paul Day, Jacob Magarro, Walter Aipa, Dino Akina, Buddy Kamakeaina all of Oahu; daughter, CharLee (Kealii) Akina of Oahu; stepdaughters, Paula Young, Leo Santiago, Chong Akina, Noe Noe Akina all of Oahu; brothers, John (Christina) Akina of California, Nephi (Debbie) Akina of Hilo, Brian Akina of Oahu; sisters, Clarice (Richard) Stick of California, Priscilla (Jeffery) Jong of Oahu, Mayette (Kosena) Funoi Moana of Oahu; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
