Free quilt show July 20-21

Quilters and those who appreciate the beauty of the art are invited to the fourth annual Tropical Inspirations Quilt Show at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel next weekend.

The show will feature a display of over 100 Hawaiian and island-themed quilts. Local quilt designers Roberta Muller and Viv Smith will be on hand to talk story about their designs and demonstrate quilting techniques.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Muller learned the art of Hawaiian quilting as a young girl from her grandmother, Therese Quinn. She began seriously quilting in her 20s and hasn’t stopped since. She teaches her craft at Kilauea Kreations II and at her home studio, both in Hilo. She will demonstrate how to use basic stitches to achieve a variety of beautiful hand-stitched quilts. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really quite easy, she says.

Smith is British by birth and was a teacher in high school until coming to America, settling in Washington state. It was there she discovered quilting and now designs quilts and sells her patterns all over the country. She also enjoys teaching quilting on the mainland and in Hawaii. Smith’s Willow Brook Quilts patterns are a mixture of patterns for all skill levels.

Keiki activities including a stitching project for children ages 6-12 and coloring/activity pages for the younger ones will be available.

Quilters are encouraged to enter their Hawaiian and tropically inspired pieces to be displayed in the hotel lobby.

The exhibition runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20 and July 21. No admission.

Rocky Horror auditions Saturday

Aloha Theatre is shivering with anticipation to hold auditions for The Rocky Horror Show, the cult classic musical! We want you to feel comfortable, confident, and ready to audition for this passionate, rock-filled show!

This Saturday join us at the Aloha Theatre to sing, dance, and have a blast getting prepped for auditions at this unique The Rocky Horror Show: Audition Boot Camp.

Tickets available for Taste of the Hawaiian Range

Tickets are available for the 23rd Taste of the Hawaiian Range evening gala. The feasting extravaganza is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 and will sprawl inside and out at Mana Christian Ohana (Old Kahilu Town Hall) behind Parker Ranch Center.

Locally produced pasture-raised meats—beef, lamb and pork—will be showcased at 20 culinary stations. Top island chefs and culinary students will dazzle dinners with their creations, including locally-inspired desserts. Guests will also enjoy an array of non-alcoholic beverages.

Tickets are $50 at Parker Ranch Store and at www.tasteofthehawaiianrange.com. Tickets will also be sold for $50 during the festival’s free family agriculture festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at the YMCA Minuke Ole Park behind Parker Ranch Center. Tickets will be $60 when purchased at the door.

Flower Drum Song opens tonight

Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network’s 18th summer musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Flower Drum Song” opens tonight.

The story is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1958 and revolves around contract marriages, immigration, unrequited love, a night club and the changing times.

It runs from today to July 28. Fridays and Saturdays start at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Kilauea General Store, Kea’au Natural Foods, Basically Books, The Most Irresistible Shop and at the door. Ticket prices are $20 general, $15 for seniors 60 plus and students and $12 Children 12 and under.

Christmas in July scheduled next week

The 27th annual Joann “Goose” Williams Christmas in July — Art, Gift, Jewelry, &Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 27 at the Courtyard at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel ballroom.

This event will feature numerous vendors from all over Hawaii with exclusive items for everyone’s holiday shopping. Free admission, and donated prizes from each vendor will be given away throughout the day. The fair is designed to promote island artists and craftspeople and a silent auction will benefit nonprofits.
