Stand with native Hawaiians against TMT

As one American haole, who feels extremely fortunate to call this beautiful island home, I’m calling out to my fellow American haoles, who also love this place, to please join me in standing with the native Hawaiians in their peaceful protection of that which they hold most sacred.

We as a nation have taken so much from the native Hawaiians. We illegally overthrew their kingdom, taking their sovereignty. We took their land and forbade them from practicing their culture or even speaking their own language. It was another horrific assault on an indigenous people at the hands of a bully nation.

In this tumultuous time we are provided with a unique opportunity as American haoles to stand with native Hawaiians to peacefully protect Maunakea and to take steps to heal the great wounds we as a nation have inflicted rather than allow our nation to strike yet another blow.

If you love Hawaii as much as I do, please join me in standing with the native Hawaiians and let us together, as one people who love Hawaii, stand up for what is right and against what is wrong.

Respect the flag

Thanks to all who helped to put on the parade on July 4. Even thought it rained and rained during the fireworks, we all enjoyed it.

If there was a down side it was the lack of respect to the color guard with the American flag. I noticed that at least 50% did not stand for its passing. Maybe I am old school but I believe in honoring the flag that many died for the rest of us to enjoy our freedom. Sometimes I wonder where we are going in this nation.

Peaman celebrates 400th event

I’d like to take an opportunity to mahalo Peaman for his love of Kona and life.

Literally, thousands of lives have been changed, all for the better, by his Peaman events. It’s never been about a competition (unless one chooses to do so), but, about the betterment of youth, families and lives.

He has truly built a lasting legacy. July 21 will be his 400th Peaman event!

Let’s all come down and join in, and mahalo Peaman for all he has given to our Kona ohana, and all who have joined in.

Editorial skipped reasons for opposition

I was dismayed to read the WHT editorial on July 12. You failed to mention what the impact of an additional 450 condo units at Kona Vistas would mean to this community and specifically, to the residents or Pualani Estates. Here are the concerns of the residents here:

1. Additional traffic of several hundred cars a day on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway. We already have near gridlock early morning and late afternoon, mostly when school is in session and during the November-March season with all the snowbirds here.

2. Traffic from Kona Vistas would go through Pualani Estates, on Hoomama and Paulehia streets, en route to Puapuanui Street. These are family neighborhoods with narrow streets and children often playing in the streets.

3. Puapuanui Street would become gridlocked morning and afternoons, with many more drivers trying to turn onto the highway.

The residents here have made their views known to Hawaiiana Management Company, to stop this planned construction project. It makes no sense with our growing population and increasing traffic on the two-lane highway!
