KAILUA-KONA —The Department of Water Supply sent out a water conservation notice for the South Kohala area at 11 a.m. Friday. The affected areas are Kawaihae, Kawaihae Harbor, Hapuna Beach Resort, Mauna Kea Beach Resort, Puako, Mauna Lani Resort and other areas in South Kohala.

The Department of Water Supply discovered an “unexpected equipment malfunction” on Thursday that prompted the conservation notice sent out Friday. Kawika Uyehara, DWS deputy director, said the department is still trying to find its source.

Measures involved for water conservation include temporarily discontinuing car washing, cutting back on irrigation as well as wisely using water both indoors and outdoors.

Uyehara said that the agency is committed to providing customers with sufficient and continuous safe drinking water, and that they are working diligently to resolve the issue.

The conservation notice will remain in effect until further notice.

The Department of Water Supply can be reached at (808) 961-8050 during normal business hours or 961-8790 for after-hour emergencies. They can also be reached via email at dws@hawaiidws.org.
