Sunset Soundbath happening Monday
Sunset Soundbath by Markus Mars will be 6 p.m. Monday at Daylight Mind Coffee Company, 75-5770 Alii Dr, Kailua Kona. Live looping artist Mars will take you on an interdimensional journey through time and space with his 5-string electric violin, telescopic didgeridoo, subwoofer cajon and some alien vocal effects.

Holualoa Village First Friday tonight
From 5:30-8:30 p.m. Holualoa Village galleries will feature new art and artists, tasty street eats and music all along Mamalahoa Highway with the August edition of their monthly Art-After-Dark event. The village block party features art and artists in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is free, and for all ages.
Women’s collection runs to Sept. 21
Isaacs Art Center presents the largest survey of women artists of Hawaii in state history, covering more than a century of diverse responses to the places and people in the islands.
The Sisters of the Brush: Women Artists of Hawaii, 1880-2000 exhibition includes works spanning the center’s permanent collection, recent acquisitions, and loans from artists and private collections. At its core, this show celebrates the 90th anniversary of The Seven, a coalition of Honolulu-based women artists who first exhibited together in 1929.
It shows from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m until Sept. 21 at the Isaacs Art Center at Hawaii Preparatory
Kona Aloha Singers winter session starts
The Kona Aloha Singers, an adult contemporary chorus, will begin their second session on Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako Street. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. and rehearsal begins at 6 p.m.
The chorus will be learning choral arrangements from 20th and 21st century songwriters in a fun but serious singing environment.
Cost to join $90, $35 for high school seniors, plus $45 for sheet music. No auditions. The winter concert is Dec. 1.

Waltz lessons starting
Waimea Ballroom Dance Club is offering six weeks of waltz dance lessons on Mondays beginning Aug. 12 through Sept 16. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. for the first 2 weeks, dancing begins at 7 p.m. Cost is $40.

Zen retreat Aug. 24
The public is invited to a zen retreat 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24 hosted by the Daifukuji Zazenkai. Please join us for a day of silence. We suggest wearing loose, comfortable clothes in subdued colors that cover your legs and shoulders and avoid fragrances. Please consider bringing a vegetarian dish to share at lunch.
During this retreat, instructions on zazen and beginning a meditation practice will be given by Rev. Jiko. Several members of the Daifukuji Zazenkai will briefly talk about their meditation journeys.

Waimea Fall Festival coming up
The third annual Waimea Fall Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Waimea District Park Complex.

Bird excursions available for bird festival
The fourth Annual Hawaii Island Festival of Birds, a four-day event Oct. 24-28 at the Sheraton Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay, is taking excursion reservations.
The 2019 theme is “Wanderers and Migrants — Hawaii’s Unique Avian Visitors,” highlighting the migratory and accidental avian visitors that arrive in Hawaii each year.
Festival programming includes Birds, Brews &Binos street fair celebration, lively panel discussions with experts from across the globe, guided birding excursions, free community bird walks, a film festival and more. Key speakers slated for HIFB 2019 include renowned experts on wanderers and migrants:
Robin Baird, PhD, Hawaiian cetacean and seabird researcher with Cascadia Research
Peter Pyle, research scientist, Hawaiian bird authority with The Institute for Bird Populations
Lindsay Young, Ph.D, executive director, Pacific Rim Conservation.

Bon Dance offers August shows
The Kona Hongwanji Taiko Group will be performing at 6 p.m. Saturday at Paauilo Kongoji Mission. The last chance to attend a dance with Kona Hongwanji Taiko Group in Kona will be 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Kona Koyasan Daishiji Mission.
Following that, they will be at Kamuela Hongwanji Mission at 7 p.m. Aug. 17. The final appearance will be 6 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Naalehu Hongwanji Mission.
Words and Wine Tuesday
Join local authors for the monthly Words and Wine event 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kona Stories Book Shop. It’s free and offers a chance to meet and greet some of Hawaii’s favorite authors and artists while enjoying complimentary pupu and wine. August’s featured authors are: Amy Patterson, Angela Leslee and Donna Beumler.
Patterson was born and raised along the shores of Lake Michigan. She wrote professional legal briefs for nearly 20 years before electing to write personal stories.
Leslee, born in England, in 2006 founded the Aloha Massage Academy in Kainaliu, where she continues to teach. She walked the Camino de Santiago (a 500-mile pilgrimage across Northern Spain), which she wrote a book about.
Beumler is a former criminal prosecutor, defense attorney, and superior court judge, which resulted in her legal thriller novel.
An informal meet and greet will merge into a more formal book presentation from each author and conclude around 8 p.m. after a Q&A session.
