Steven Cunha

Steven Philip Cunha died July 13, 2019. Born Feb. 7, 1947, in Oakland, Calif., he served in the Air Force, worked for Santa Cruz City Schools in the maintenance department, and in the construction trade in Hawaii for property management companies, moving to Ocean View in 2001 where he practiced self-sustainable living with his family.

Steve is survived by life partner, V Lee Fuqua; daughters, Carrie (Todd) Lane, and Chrisy (Mike) Maggiolo; sisters, Carol (Norman) Scott, Donna (Bill) Lanen; brother, David Parks; five grandchildren; as well as family and numerous friends.

Raymond Handa

Raymond Toshio Handa, 60, of Hilo, died July 18, 2019. Born in Honolulu, he was an employee of MZ Flooring.

A private service was held.

He is survived by his wife, LilaAnn Handa; son, Taylor (Shelby) Handa of Hilo; daughters, Cheyenne (Paul) Handa of Oahu and Riley (Analu) Handa of Oahu; brothers, Steven (Shari) Handa of Las Vegas and Howard Handa of Oahu; sister, Karen Handa of Oahu; and hanai brother, Berger (Briana) Paolo of Waikoloa.

Sawayo Ono

Sawayo “Alice” Ono, 97, of Hilo, died July 10, 2019, at a private care home in Hilo. Born June 1, 1922, in Ookala, she was retired from the Hilo Hospital as a housekeeper, and a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and South Pohakulani Street Kumiai.

Private services held. No flowers, no koden.

She is survived by daughters, Dianne (Harold) Kameda of Hilo and Arleen (Charles) Tarnay of Honolulu; brothers, Tetsuo (Nora) Uratani of Honolulu, Isamu (May) Fukui of Laupahoehoe, Thomas (Leoni) Fukui of Hilo, Donald (Carol) Fukui of Honolulu and Richard (Elaine) Fukui of Hilo; sisters, Lucy Ganeku of California, Kimiko Schreiber of Puna, Harumi Higashigawa of California and Nancy (Robert) Delos Santos of Honolulu; five grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Ada Forand

Ada Alice Forand, 96, of Kailua-Kona, died July 18, 2019, at Legacy of Life in Hilo. Born in Sept. 18, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas, she was a homemaker.

Private services.

She is survived by her son, Charles Smith, Jr. of Kailua-Kona; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Edward Awa

Edward Ikaku Awa, 85, of Middle Keei, died June 30, 2019, at Tripler Army Medical Center. Born March 16, 1934, in South Kona, he was a U.S. Army retired chief warrant officer.

A celebration of life will be held at noon Aug. 17 at the Big Game Fishing Clubhouse at Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona. Inurnment with military honors will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 19 at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona. Casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by his sons, Kevin (Rose) Awa of Kona and Steven (Donna) Awa of Arizona; daughter, Mae Johnson of California; brother, Harold (Ehrentraud) Awa of Kona; sisters, Florence Awa Llanes of Keauhou, Margie (Tony) Amouguis of Kona, May Aiko Awa of Kailua-Kona, Gladys Nacis of Papaikou; companion, Ululani Cho of Capt. Cook; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
