KAILUA-KONA — Deniz Tek was driving home with his wife Wednesday night, heading northbound on Palani Road around 10:15 p.m., when they came upon a single-vehicle wreck about a half mile south of Hina Lani Street.

Tek got out of their vehicle, as other motorists had, to see if there was any help he could offer as first responders hadn’t yet arrived.

Tek said the driver had apparently gotten out of his truck through the window and was walking around dazed but appearing uninjured.

A few flames were visible around the vehicle, but then the wreck burst into a ball of flame, Tek said.

“And this fire just took off,” he said. “I thought we better get away from this truck, there might be an explosion.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene shortly after.

Police said their investigating the matter and will provide more information when it’s available.
