KAILUA-KONA — Garrett Duran, Chris Revecho and Douglas Delmar were enjoying a Friday afternoon at Old Kona Airport Park when they heard screeching tires and saw an SUV flip multiple times on the old runway in front of the Makaeo Walking Path.

Then they heard the screams of children coming from the flipped vehicle, and they immediately ran to render aid.

“I was thinking we got to get the kids out now,” said Duran.

He said the odor of gasoline was very strong and they could see gas leaking from the vehicle.

The trio pulled for children, including a baby, from the wreckage and got them far enough from the vehicle in case it caught fire.

They believed there were two adult occupants in the vehicle, but could not be sure because they self-extricated.

Police and rescue personnel arrived shortly after the crash.

One adult and two children were transported to Kona Community Hospital in good condition. No additional details were available Friday.

Duran, Revecho and Delmar, a bit shaken by the ordeal, went on to enjoy the rest of their day.
