Michael Sherline

Michael David Sherline, 75, of Naalehu, died Aug. 22, 2019, at home. Born on June 25, 1944, in South Carolina, he was retired from Pima County Sheriff’s Department, a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Big Band Express, the United States Navy Band, Hawaii County Band of West Kamuela, Cook Chamber Orchestra, Ka’u Concert Band, and received a National Defense Service medal.

Services will be held on Sept. 7 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints in Naalehu.

Michael is survived by wife, Samantha Sherline of Naalehu; son, James Kamalu McCabe Long; brother, Donald Sherline of Maryville, Tenn.; sister, Marjorie Meredith of Maryville, Tenn.

Alice Babin

Rev. Alice Elizabeth (Duffy) Babin, 82, of Salem, Va. and formerly of Kealakekua, died Aug. 31, 2019. Born April 9, 1937, in New Orleans, she was the first woman ordained a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago in 1977. She served many congregations and other entities including Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua, St. George’s Episcopal Church in Mount Savage, Md., the Hawaii AIDS Clinical Trials Unit in Honolulu, the Cathedral at St. Andrews and The Priory School in Honolulu as well as Duke University in Durham, N.C.

She is survived by son, Don Memmer (Joy) of Hilo; daughters, Ashley Lee (Marvin) of Carlsbad, Calif. and Kai Memmer (Susan Bower) of Salem, Va.; brother, John Duffy (Lib) of Pass Christian, Miss.; sister, Frances Duffy Coggin Cooper (Tuvia) of Porriya, Va.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Owl Corcoran

Owl Clearmorning Chu Corcoran, 42, of Keaau, died Aug. 23, 2019. He was a bartender for Kaleo’s Bar and Grill and a proponent of No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a Magalit BJJ purple belt, who rolled locally at The Brave Fitness and Nu Era.

Service will be held Sept. 6 at Ballard Family Mortuary, 570 Kinoole St. in Hilo. Visitation begins at 2:30 p.m., service to follow at 4 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Heather Tehani Corcoran; daughter, Kezia Kalila Corcoran; son, Ammaron Cade Corcoran of Keaau; mother, Liane Suemei Chu Corcoran of Keaau; brothers, Kumar Laughingspring Chu (and Fabiola) Corcoran of California, Mathew Ignace Johnson of Canada; grandmother, Vyolet Lum Chu of California; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Helen Hirata

Helen Sakiyo Hirata, 93, of Honaunau, died July 22, 2019, at Life Care Center of Kona. Born Feb. 4, 1926, in Kealakekua, she was a cashier at the former Sure Save Super Market and a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 14 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Honaunau. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

She is survived by her daughters, Pauline (Stephan) Miller of Kealia, Marcia (Ronald) Nishida of Simi Valley, Calif., Lynda (Wallace) Hing of Honaunau, Lena (Tatsuyuki) Fukuda of San Gabriel, Calif.; brother, Masamori (Eva) Takaki of Hilo; sister, Itsuko Sawada of Hilo; one son-in-law; one sister-in-law; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Frederika Suverkropp

Frederika J. Suverkropp, 80, of Ocean View, died Aug. 24, 2019, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Feb. 26, 1939, in Ragoeng, Indonesia, she was an analyst for a traveler’s insurance company.

She is survived by husband, Ernst Suverkropp of Ocean View; daughters, Shirley Swenson of Castaic, Calif. and Colleen (Tom) Ross of Sylmar, Calif.; sister, Ida Boeje of Holland.

Olga Rios

Olga Rios, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 30, 2019, at her residence. Born July 25, 1939, in New York, New York, she was a retired accountant and US Army veteran.

Visitation will be 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at Kona Hispanic Seventh Day Church, 74-5590 Eho Street, Ste. 115, Kailua-Kona Service is at 4 p.m.

She is survived by brother, Robert Rios of Kailua-Kona; sister, Viola Faria of Missouri; numerous friends, nieces and nephews.

Jordan Powell

Jordan Seth Powell, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 29, 2019 in Kealakekua. Born on May 17, 1993 in Biloxi, Miss., he worked as a car repair technicial.
