Kailua Village Artists featuring artist Thomas Carey
For the month of October, the Kailua Village Artists Gallery is featuring photographer and wood turner Thomas Carey.
An award-winning photographer, Carey became interested in photography while he was in junior high school in Southern California, taking pictures of his friends surfing and skateboarding.
As an adult, he took up scuba diving in 1976. Soon after he bought a Nikonos III underwater camera. He soon became more serious, purchasing a used Oceanic housing for his Nikon F-2 camera, which allowed the use of many lenses and gave him more creative control.
After retiring and moving to Hawaii in 2004, Carey traveled the world to take marine photography underwater and topside, landscapes, and portraits.
His photos have been featured in publications such as Skin Diver Magazine, Sportfishing Magazine, Nat Geo Explorer, and California Fish and Game Magazine.
Carey’s other medium is wood turning in his home studio in Kona. He specializes in Hawaiian woods, including koa, mango, Norfolk pine, milo and monkeypod,
Carey will be working at the gallery on Fridays, Oct 4, 11, 18 and 25 in the Kona Marketplace, 75-5729 Alii Drive, Ste C-110 in Kailua-Kona. The gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 pm.

Ohrlando’s hosts Oktoberfest
Ein Prosit auf die Gemütlichkeit! — a toast to good cheer!
Ohrlando and Ursula will offer Bavarian oom-pah-pah music but also tunes from Vienna, Tirol and Switzerland during their Oktoberfest concert 4 p.m. Saturday.
Charley O’Kelly will join the pair with his trumpet and the tenor-horn. Bier, bratwurst and other snacks and drinks will be provided.

Hawaii Diaper Bank fundraiser Saturday
Hawaii Diaper Bank — the first nonprofit in Hawaii to provide free diapers, wipes and other children’s basic essentials to low income families with young children — will hold its inaugural annual “Wipe Out Diaper Need” fundraising event from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Umeke’s Restaurant in Kailua-Kona.
“Wipe Out Diaper Need” is a family-friendly event featuring live music from Binti Bailey, Lopaka Rootz, Keola Tallett and Jeff Tree, all-you-can-eat food and unlimited drinks, fun keiki activities like face-painting and balloon making, exciting raffle prizes, silent auction and more.
“Diaper need impacts one in three families, and there are no government programs focused on addressing diaper need. Therefore, it is up to us as a community to solve this problem which affects our friends, family and island community,” HDB Founder and President Jessica Histo said in a press release.
“Wipe Out Diaper Need” is timed to coincide with the end of the National Diaper Bank Network’s Diaper Need Awareness Week, an annual campaign during which diaper banks from around the country work together with state and local governments to raise awareness about diaper need and plan events to rally sustainable support for diaper bank programs.
As part of its Diaper Need Awareness Week efforts, and in connection with Wipe Out Diaper Need, HDB is asking for donations of diapers and wipes to support local families in Hawaii.
All proceeds will go toward supporting HDB’s mission to ensure that all Hawaii Island keiki are clean, dry, and healthy.
Tickets are $15 for kids and $65 for adults.

One Aloha Shave Ice hosts Protect Maunakea fundraiser
Jon Lomberg, an artist inspired by astronomy and one of the foremost interpreters of astronomy to the public, will be selling his works on Saturday to raise money to support the protesters on Maunakea.
Lomberg played Carl Sagan’s colleague on the TV series Cosmos and the film Contact and has won an Emmy Award. He also has an asteroid officially named after him, the Asteroid Lomberg.
Special poster prints co-created by Lomberg and world-renowned Hawaiian artist, historian and writer Herb Kane entitled, “The Ocean Planet” will be sold from 4-6 p.m. that day at One Aloha Shave Ice, 75-5711 Kuakini Highway. The prints cost $15 and are specifically drawn with the Pacific Ocean as the center perspective as viewed from space.
All of the profits will be donated for the benefit of the daily needs of the Maunakea protectors. A raffle for another special print by Lomberg will take place as will drawing giveaways for One Aloha Shave Ice gift certificates.
