KAILUA-KONA — Aloha Theatre’s satirical sendup of the therapy industry, dating and sexuality continues this weekend after a rousing opening last week.
Shows continue at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the stage in Kainaliu, and again Oct. 11-13.
The show is a 1983 comedy by Tony Award-winning playwright Christopher Durang and examines — if not slices up — the dating process.
Bruce, played by Robb Dahlke, runs a personal ad, which Prudence (Sara Hagen) answers. Bruce is in therapy with Charlotte (Robin O’Hara), and Prudence is in therapy with Stuart, portrayed by Quinton Loder. Both therapists offer controversial treatment regimens. Bruce has a male lover, Bob (Xavier Chung), which complicates everything. They all meet up at a restaurant where the service is notoriously slow. Finally a feisty waiter, played by Gerald Lucena, shows up and helps the dysfunctional group find closure.
Beyond Therapy was first produced at the Phoenix Theatre in New York City starring Stephen Collins and Sigourney Weaver. Later it played on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre starring John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest.
