KARES receives Hawaii Community Foundation FLEX grant
The Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service (KARES) has been awarded a $15,000 Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) FLEX grant. The grant is comprised of $10,000 from HCF’s Traut Carson Fund and $5,000 from the Baciu Cultural Fund.
“We are most grateful to the Hawaii Community Foundation for this generous grant,” said Deborah M. Cravatta, KARES founder and president. “FLEX grantees are considered to exemplify the best practices of high performance and we believe that is a high honor. This type of grant is so very valuable to us as it provides the flexibility to use the funds as needed, and it will certainly allow us to provide even better care for the animals in our care.”
KARES is a nonprofit volunteer group dedicated to rescue of homeless companion animals, foster care and their adoptions into forever homes. KARES hosts free spay and neuter clinic for dogs in community locations to help reduce and control the overpopulation of dogs on the island. Since inception of the KARES Canine Spay and Neuter Program in late 2011, KARES has provided almost 5,000 free surgeries for pets of island residents.
Toy drive this Saturday
Walmart and The Salvation Army are joining forces to provide toys to keiki in need during the holidays with toy drive events at all 10 Walmart stores in Hawaii, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
To participate, simply stop by and drop off new toys to The Salvation Army at the front of each Walmart store. Walmart’s 10 Hawaii store locations include: Kauai – Lihue; Oahu – Downtown Honolulu/Fort Street Mall, Honolulu/Keeaumoku, Kapolei, Kunia/Waipahu, Mililani, and Pearl City; Maui – Kahului; Hawaii – Hilo and Kailua-Kona.
