Woman killed in head-on crash on Queen Kaahumanu Highway

KAILUA-KONA — A woman is dead following a two-car head-on crash Sunday afternoon near mile marker 90 on Queen Kaahumanu Highway in North Kona.

The Hawaii Police Department said that upon the arrival of officers, it was learned a Jeep Renegade traveling southbound crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Honda Pilot traveling northbound around 2:10 p.m.

The operator of the Jeep, a 25-year-old man, suffered unknown type injuries and was transported to Kona Community Hospital, according to police.

The operator of the Honda, a woman police said was in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Three other female occupants of the Honda were also transported to the Kona Community Hospital. Police said the victim’s ages and injuries were not immediately known.

The crash closed Queen Kaahumanu Highway between Waikoloa Road and Keahole Street, the entrance to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, until about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The investigation is continuing, police said. No additional information was immediately available.
