HONOLULU — Honolulu police say an armed robbery suspect is dead after five officers shot at him while he tried to flee in a stolen vehicle.

Chief Susan Ballard says police spotted two men at a Kapolei gas station Tuesday night in a vehicle that was stolen in an armed robbery days earlier. The men were featured in a bulletin and were possible suspects in multiple armed robberies.

Ballard says when officers in plainclothes and unmarked vehicles announced themselves as police, the passenger who was filling the gas tank, ran away and the driver tried to drive away, hitting a police vehicle and grazed one of the officers.

Ballard says five officers fired their guns, hitting the driver multiple times.

An administrative investigation will determine whether the officers followed proper procedures.
