Myrtle Shiroyama

Myrtle Maile Shiroyama, 91, of Waimea, died Nov. 2, 2019 at her residence. She was born on Nov. 20, 1927 in Pahala. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 at Imiola Church in Waimea. Memorial service will begin 11 a.m. with lunch to follow in the Imiola Hale Laiana Church Hall.

She is preceded in death by husband, Kiyoso “Jumbo” Shiroyama and six brothers.

She is survived by son, Gary (Laura) Shiroyama; daughter, Margo Shiroyama (Jim Scribner) of Waimea; two granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Hardy Mathews

Hardy Terrance Mathews, 66, of Hilo, died Nov. 4, 2019, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a professional musician with The Shindigs, a carpenter, tree cutter, painter, ranch hand, groundskeeper and worked on the poison gang for the former Hilo Coast Processing Company until a motorcycle accident rendered him disabled.

Celebration of life at a later date.

He is survived by companion, Colleen Monsarrat of Hilo; son, Joelan Mathews of Papaikou; daughters, Lanalyn (Joey) Abadilla, Reyna (Larry Pavao) Mathews and Sheena Mathews, all of Papaikou; mother, Anita Mathews of Hilo; brother, Wayne (Carol) Mathews of Hilo; 17 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
