KAILUA-KONA — A 75-year-old man apparently drowned Tuesday morning in waters off Lekeleke Bay in Keauhou.

Responding to a 9:38 a.m. Tuesday report of a swimmer in distress north of the bay fire rescue personnel arrived on scene to learn that paddlers in a double-hull canoe had loaded the victim into their vessel prior to arrival and were headed to Keauhou Harbor, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. Lekeleke Bay is known locally as End of the World.

Medics staged at Keauhou until the canoe arrived. At that point, medics took over and initiated advanced life saving measures and transported the man to Kona Community Hospital. The department listed the incident as a fatality.
